Dave, I think real leadership and charisma have 4 principles in common:
1. listen to you clients, stakeholders, cooperators (understand them seriously) & assimilate their needs in your vision
2. communicate clearly your goals based on an authentic, inspiring vision
3. start concrete working on it with them (purposeful), trust your people & give them responsabilisation, support
4. evaluate everybody's results (don't judge people / don't create politics) & keep on correcting and adjusting

The core is probably the same as the past and present core -- people's sharing of purposes tied to what they see as "challenging" missions.
Tomorrow’s leaders are currently in the playgrounds of our schools; the challenge of our generation is to prepare them to face all the problems (political, ecological, financial, social...) that we have created for them.
We need to start (if not already started) "role-modelling" all the words that have been previously mentioned; Martin Luther King had a dream but he turned it into reality by acting – as Ghandi said, “be the change you want to see in the world”.
As Gandhi said, "be the change you want to see in the world" - I realise that it's not easy to be "politically incorrect" but if that's what you believe.........
Most people who became "recognised" (let alone great) leaders stopped, at some point in time, being politically correct.

Most obvious has been said save for Judi's. :)
Yet let me add some lines...
With the continuous advancing of technology, the core of tomorrow's leadership needs GREATER Anticipation/Understanding of: Customer's needs... towards satisfaction and loyalty; Competitor's moves... to be more competitive and for possible collaboration if it's the best way to grow; Employee's motivation... to get long term engagement and enhance greater creativity among them; Suppliers' businesses... to ensure supplies availability, cost efficiency and growth to both parties; Shareholder's motives... to see through their plans and get stronger support.
